Pantheon Forge

Author’s Note: I’m certain there are already games out there that do this sort of thing much better, but it’s been on my mind as I’ve playing Hades II. Even more than usual, Friends at the Table has influenced my ideas here, and I’d probably need to develop them more to do that influence justice.

A GM-less world-building game about creating a pantheon of deities and the relationships and stories that surround them.

Setup

As a group, talk a bit about your shared world that you’re building. Are you starting from scratch? Are you extending a mythical pantheon from a real-world culture, like mythic fan-fiction? Are you building out the world from a previous game you’ve played? Any of these will work.

Play

Take turns around the table for as many turns as you like. On your first turn, follow the prompt for the “Bestow a Title” option and introduce a new deity. On subsequent turns, choose freely from the three options.

A. Bestow a Title

Choose a title format from below, fill in its details, and assign it to a new or existing deity. deities can have several titles and domains.

Use one of these formats as-is, adjust it in some way, or make up your own format entirely.

B. Connect Two Deities

Draw a line between two deities and label it with the connection between them. Choose one of the options below or make up your own.

siblings, parent and child, rivals, enemies, lovers, former lovers, fated never to meet, etc.

Then, introduce some small detail about that connection, a few words or a sentence, that adds character to the relationship. (For example ”X is Y’s most beloved child, the youngest among their jealous siblings.”)

C. Write a Saga
