A Halloween Party Game
A silly social game to play at a Halloween Party.
This game leans towards lyric game; I don’t think anything terrible will happen if you play it as written, but I also don’t necessarily endorse making shit up to friends and strangers. Make your own decisions.
How to Play
- Attend the party wearing a costume that does not clearly map to any character or person that people would recognize. it should be obviously “costume-y” but not remotely recognizable. You might combine odds and ends from other costumes.
- If you attend the party in a typical costume, you’ll need to convince other guests to trade items of their outfit with you. Heck, while you’re at it you may as well get them in on the game as well. Just note that they can no longer
- Each time somebody asks you who you’re dressed up as, invent a new explanation for who you’re portraying. Try to suggest that they’re a character that comes from a story, not something generic. (e.g. instead of “I’m a doctor and who’s also a lifeguard”, say something like “I’m Dale Springfield, a lesser known comic book hero called the Guardian of Life. He fights beach crime and saves swimmers from danger.”
- If you repeat an invented character, you lose. This is true even if you answer the question in front of someone else who’s already heard a different answer. You don’t lose even if you get caught giving different answers. This is just a funny bit you’re doing, right?
- If you encounter someone else who has a mismatched or difficult-to-place costume, ask them who they’re dressed up as. If they answer with a very specific character that you’ve never heard of…
- …squint at them…let an awkward moment pass…
- …and then say “I’ve totally heard of them”
- If they say “you totally have”, you both win
- Note that if you both already knew you were playing the game (like if you traded costume parts with them), neither of you can win this way. You can only win with someone who you have not spoken of the game with at all.
