Scattered to the Stars

An asynchronous journaling game for one or more players. Play as Starfolk, non-human spacefarers who have been scattered to the stars in the wake of their planet’s destruction. In the blast of their star’s supernova, they gained a connection to the stars themselves and a curse to be forever apart from one another.

The text of this game is intended to be printed and attached to the beginning of a blank notebook that will then be passed between players.

During each session, the subsequent pages of the journal will be added to and the Memories section will be filled in, a little bit at a time.

The Starfolk

We are Starfolk, the last survivors of a dying species showered in stardust. The supernova that destroyed our world took with it the vast majority of our species, with those remaining escaping on prototype starships built in frantic desperation.

The ships were enough to survive the blast, but not to avoid being changed by it. Each of us, we have since learned, has had our very being infused with stardust. Through it we have become enfolded into the collective souls of all the stars throughout the universe, can feel the blanket of gravity stretched across the cosmos, held taught by each and every one. Through this unseen force we can distantly sense each others movements and feel the births and deaths of stars themselves.

And yet, despite this connection across the infinity of space, we can never meet one another. We have learned through terrible experience that to bring two Starfolk into proximity with one another causes vast gravitational convulsions, killing both and destroying much of their surroundings. Our fates are intertwined with those of the stars.

For our species to continue any longer, we must live out our numbered days spread far apart. But anywhere we may rest our heads where we can see the night sky, we can also connect our minds and share our thoughts. If even a single star can be seen, so too can they be felt, and their voices heard, intermingled with our own.

Perhaps we are the only ones who can speak this cosmic language. But even if that is so, we’ve decided to etch our stories into the stars nonetheless. That we may know each other again across time and space, and someone else may someday know us too.

How to Play

Each player should play a single round of this game (following the Catching Up, Sharing a Story, and Adding a Memory steps in the How to Play section), then pass the notebook to someone else or leave it somewhere that it might be found, its story continued. You are but one of the Starfolk among many other survivors out there in the universe.

To play the game, follow these steps:

  1. Read what’s been written so far, as specified in Catching Up
  2. Share a story of your own, as specified in Sharing a Story
  3. Formalize a detail about the Starfolk, as specified in the Memories section

Catching Up

Our stories are many, though there are few of us left to tell them.

The first step of the game is to read what is written so far. Flip through the book and read the words of those before you who have etched their stories into the stars. You needn’t read them all, but you should read at least a few entries with interest and curiosity.
