Final Dive (working title)

Final Dive is a solo journaling horror game about exploring the depths of an alien ocean in the aftermath of a submarine wreck. Your crew is dead and soon you will be too, unless you can find a way out.

This game takes heavy inspiration from Subnautica and Iron Lung.

The Expedition

You are among the crew of a deep sea vessel research and exploration vessel, investigating the alien life within a vast ocean on a recently discovered frontier planet, not known to be inhabited by intelligent life.

Answer: What is this planet’s name or designation?

Aboard the ship are 14 people, separated into two distinct types: highly-educated researchers and a small crew of prisoners doing the hard labor, working to reduce their sentences. You belong to the latter group.

Answer: Are you guilty of the crimes you were charged with? If so, do you regret them?

Key functionality of the submarine vessel can only be operated by the researchers, while you and a few other crew members are kept in line with wrist monitors capable of subduing you if you attempt to cause trouble.

Answer: What does this vessel look like? What is its name, and what do you actually call it?

The Crash

The expedition proceeded without incident in the shallows. The researchers decided to descend further, hoping for an opportunity to safely dive outside the submarine in search of more remarkable or lucrative discoveries.

But as you neared your target depth and the sunlight receded into a dim and distant haze, something unexpected happened.

An unseen creature, enormous and terrifying, crashed against your submarine once, then a second time. You rushed with the other prisoners to don your dive suits and attempt a death-defying exterior repair. But when the creature crashed into your ship for the third time, you were thrown against a bulkhead and knocked out cold.

When you came to, you found yourself drifting near the wreckage of your submarine. The rest of the crew has disappeared: all 13 of them. Your dive suit is intact. Your oxygen supply is mostly full and the suit’s advanced micro-thruster system still works, allowing you to move easily through the murky depths. Its on-board computer is functioning too, so you can map the regions and plant radar nodes as you go.

Awake, and somehow alive, you are the only one left. You have until your oxygen runs out to find a way to safety. But that depends on whether something else finds you first.

The Depths

The game is played by exploring a map of Regions containing strange wildlife and unsettling mysteries. To build your ocean floor, follow these steps:

  1. Shuffle a the deck of cards, then draw three. If any cards among the three have the same rank a each other, discard and redraw until you have three cards with unique ranks (suits can repeat). Note down what those cards were (suit and rank), then return all cards to the deck.
  2. Sort the deck into 13 stacks of 4, separated by rank, then flip each rank stack facedown and shuffle each one briefly.
